Live Camera Wellington Harbour North Island – New Zealand

Αναρτήθηκε από τον/την planetsos στο Αυγούστου 26, 2011

Wellington Harbour is the large natural harbour at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, is on the western side of Wellington Harbour. The harbour was officially named Port Nicholson  until it assumed its current name in the 1980s.

In Māori the harbour is Te Whanganui-a-Tara (the great harbour of Tara). A Māori name for Wellington,Pōneke is often said to be a transliteration of Port Nick, although this etymology is disputed.

Wellington is the capital city and third most populous urban area of New Zealand. The urban area is situated on the southwestern tip of the country’s North Island, and lies between Cook Strait and the Rimutaka Range. It is home to 389,700 residents, with an additional 3,700 residents living in the surrounding rural areas.

The Wellington urban area is the major population centre of the southern North Island, and is the seat of the Wellington Region which in addition to the urban area covers the Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa. The urban area includes four cities: Wellington City, on the peninsula between Cook Strait and Wellington Harbour, contains the central business district and about half of Wellington’s population; Porirua City on Porirua Harbour to the north is notable for its large M?ori and Pacific Island communities; Lower Hutt City and Upper Hutt City are largely suburban areas to the northeast, together known as the Hutt Valley.

The 2009 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranked Wellington 12th in the world on its list

Lower Hutt (Maori: Awakairangi) is a city in the Wellington region of New Zealand. Its council has adopted the name Hutt City Council, but neither the New Zealand Geographic Board nor the Local Government Act recognise the name Hutt City. This alternative name can lead to confusion, as there are two cities in the Hutt Valley, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. The Upper Hutt City Council objects to the name of Hutt City. The former Hutt County included much of the area of both Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt.

Lower Hutt is in the Wellington Region. It is the tenth largest city in New Zealand in population, and covers an area of

Live photo Ngauruhoe Volcano

Αναρτήθηκε από τον/την planetsos στο Μαΐου 3, 2010

Mount Ngauruhoe (English pronunciation: Nah-eu-ru-ho-eh, Māori IPA: [ŋauɾuhoe]) is an active stratovolcano in New Zealand. It is the youngest vent in the Tongariro volcanic complex on the Central Plateau of the North Island, and first erupted about 2,500 years ago. Although seen by most as a volcano in its own right, it is technically a secondary cone of Mount Tongariro.

The volcano lies between the active volcanoes of Mount Tongariro to the north and Mount Ruapehu to the south, to the west of the Rangipo Desert 25 kilometres to the south of the southern shore of Lake Taupo.

It erupted 45 times in the 20th century, most recently in 1977.[1] Fumaroles exist inside the inner crater and on the rim of the eastern, outer crater.

There are several possible explanations for the mountain’s name. The most plausible is Nga Uru Hoe, meaning “throwing heated stones”.

In the early 2000s Mount Ngauruhoe was used as a stand-in for the fictional Mount Doom in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, achieving worldwide exposure.

Recent Activity

* June 6, 2006 The volcano alert level for Mount Ngauruhoe was raised from 0 to 1.

During the last three weeks there has been a significant change in the number and magnitude of low frequency earthquakes being recorded by seismographs around Mt Ngauruhoe.

Initial analysis indicates these earthquakes are occurring about 4 km deep beneath Ngauruhoe, but they could be shallower.

* June 14, 2006 “Science Alert Bulletin NGA-06/03 – Update on Activity and Observations at Ngauruhoe”

“Seismic activity at Ngauruhoe remains elevated, although it has declined to 10 to 20 volcanic earthquakes per day from a peak of approximately 50 per day in early June. The largest earthquakes are approximately magnitude 1. Locations for the earthquakes place them 1 to 4 km deep and slightly to the north or east of the summit. The accuracy of these locations is hampered by the earthquakes being very small, as they are recorded on only three or four permanent seismographs.” more.
